New Order: Collage Now

One of Stephen Knezovich's pieces - New Horizon No15

Three years ago I met with Stephen Knezovich and Seth Clark to toy with the idea of doing a collage show together. Some how, they suggested I curate one. I have curated small poster shows but a gallery show is completely different. I knew I couldn’t do it alone and emailed Sonja Sweterlitsch to see if she had any interest. She said yes and here we are today.

I park in the garage by the gallery a lot and love this view

Having the idea for the show was just a tiny part of all of this. Sonja prepared the proposal, we gathered the roster we wanted, approached a few galleries, contacted the artists for their information, did social media, press releases and much more happened in that span of time.

We are excited that the opening reception is finally here on Friday, June 3 at 6-9pm at Future Tenant. It’s open to everyone! The line up includes Seth Clark, Stephanie Armbruster, Kim Fox, Mary Dorfner Hay, Matthew Buchholz, Crystala Armagost, Ron Copeland and Stephen Knezovich. I’m not going to reveal too much in this post but wanted to show a few studio shots and works in progress. Take a look:

Alternate Histories of the World

I’m so excited to give you guys a sneak preview into the new awesome book by Matthew Buchholz, known for his Alternate Histories line of prints and greeting cards.

This new book (which you can pre-order) is based on the series of prints that feature historic maps, photographs with monsters, robots, zombies, and sci-fi creations. What if a robot was present at the signing of the Declaration of Independence? Or aliens built the Statue of Liberty?

Matthew was inspired by the rich history of Pittsburgh and his first print was an 1867 view of Pittsburgh & Allegheny with a monster crushing his way across the skyline. The posters has since expanded to included over 60 cities and now a book: Alternate Histories of the World is a humorous pictorial history of the world that looks at the influence of these various creatures on mankind’s development.

Desktop Wallpaper Series

Pittsburgh Desktop Wallpaper Series

Each month of 2012 Steeltown is releasing a Pittsburgh inspired Desktop Wallpaper created by a local designer or artist. For January we asked Matthew Buchholz of Alternate Histories to work his magic and put something together for us. I’m sure you have seen his amazing series of posters where he combines historic photos of our city with science-fiction imagery. Below we listed a few different size options for you to download.

I love that this looks like an old newspaper ad with bold type and the textures he added. I hope you enjoy this too and huge thanks Matt for creating this for us! Be sure to follow Matt on FB and Twitter.

Handmade Arcade Vendors: Prints and Posters

I wanted to help out Handmade Arcade by featuring some of what you can expect during this year’s event. The artists that I have posted today will be selling prints and posters at the show.

Yardsale Press is by Bryan Sculthorpe. A screen printer and designer from the New Jersey area. His work is made up of hand drawn images and found elements. I really dig his bright color choices and messages that he creates through his collages.

I LOVE Matthew Buchholz’s “Alternate Histories: Pittsburgh” series where he combines historic photos of our city with science-fiction imagery. I really need to get my hands on one of these prints!

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Laura George Art + Illustration work is by Chicago artist and illustrator Laura Berger. I have seen her work around before so it will be great to check her stuff out at the show. If you go to her shop online, some of her pieces are actually really simple and bold while others have a lot more detail included.

I was so excited to see that Hero Design Studio will be apart of this year’s event! I have emailed and chatted with Beth who is such a sweetheart. It will be great to finally meet her and her husband Mark in person. These two really know their way around poster design and create dynamic work! I did an interview with them a couple months ago and you can read it right here.
