<span style="font-family: Arial;">There is something fascinating to me when it comes to living in a tiny home, cabin or trailer. Sometimes I daydream of owning a small home in New England and living in a more secluded area when i&#8217;m older. I might get bored and have to venture into the city from time to time but the thought of being somewhere quiet and peaceful seems exciting to me at this point.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span id="more-6487"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I came across this great site via <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL2Rlc2lnbi1taWxrLmNvbS8=">Design Milk</a> called <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3Rpbnlob3VzZWxpc3RpbmdzLmNvbS8=">Tiny House Listings</a> where it has different types of small homes for sell or for rent. I particularly love reading the <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3Rpbnlob3VzZWxpc3RpbmdzLmNvbS9jYXRlZ29yeS9ibG9nLw==">blog</a> on this site which covers all sorts of topics having to do with tiny homes. </span></p>

<span style="font-family: Arial;"><em>Photos courtesy of CB2</em><br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">While living in a loft apartment, space wasn&#8217;t much of an issue for us but moving into a smaller place we had to downsize our furniture and possessions. We previously had a very large book shelf but in our new apartment, it was way too big. We searched around online and took a trip to IKEA but nothing really fit what we were looking for. Finally, I came across <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5jYjIuY29tL21lZGlhLXN0b3JhZ2Uvb2ZmaWNlLzMuMTQtd2hpdGUtYm9va2Nhc2UvZjYyODE=">this beauty on CB2</a> for the low price tag of $500 which includes a few white white boards and some hardware. What a steal!<br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span id="more-6289"></span><br />
I have no problem buying furniture and spending a little money but I found the price tag on this to be a little ridiculous. Kristy mentioned that she might be able to make it and that it looked really simple. After some more research I came across an article on <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5hcGFydG1lbnR0aGVyYXB5LmNvbS90aGUtbG9vay1mb3ItbXUtMTM5NTI1">Apt Therapy</a> where someone did build this themselves. So here is our version and directions:</p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvODA4LmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6291" title="808" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/808.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="392" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvODA5LmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6292" title="809" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/809.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="392" /></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><br />
(5) 44 ½ inch x 12inch boards<br />
(8) 12inch x 12inch square boards<br />
1QT Kilz Primer (this primer doesn&#8217;t smell)<br />
1QT glossy white paint<br />
Foam roller brushes<br />
Fine Sandpaper<br />
Metal screws</p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvODE0LmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6293" title="814" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/814.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="392" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">We took a trip to Lowes out in the Waterfront and they were helpful about everything. We went for a slightly harder wood than Pine, I don&#8217;t recall the exact name. The guys at the store helped us go through the different options and cut everything perfectly.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Next, sand down all wood as smooth as you would like it. I left ours slightly rough so that noticing it was real wood would be easy. Since it was cold out, I was forced to paint indoors. For a drop cloth I just cut up garbage bags and it worked well.</p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvODExLmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6294" title="811" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/811.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="392" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvODEzLmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6295" title="813" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/813.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="392" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">I painted all the boards with two coats of the primer then two coats of white paint. Give the paint the allotted time to dry in between coats. (The fireplace made the paint dry a lot faster!)<br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I laid all of the pieces on the floor to find where I would like to put the support boards. To visualize where I would like them, I used chopsticks to give me a guideline before I drew the lines on with pencil. You can use any household item.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I measured two inches from the edge of both the vertical boards and horizontal boards to create pilot holes. Just be careful that everything matches up before you drill. </p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvcGFpbnRlZC5qcGc="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6335" title="painted" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/painted.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="392" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvc3RhcnRlZC5qcGc="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6336" title="started" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/started.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="392" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">After drilling the holes, I put the bottom at a higher level (i.e. our coffee table) and placed the boards in one by one. The entire shelf cost us $95 total!</p>

Ryan first sketched this one on paper, scanned it into Illustrator and began redrawing it in vector using the pen tool. The final touches were done in Photoshop. <p>I have been following <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL2Job2xkZXJtYW4uY29tLw==">Brian Holderman&#8217;s</a> work for some time now and was excited when he agreed to do an interview with Steeltown. His work has been all around Pittsburgh over the years stretching across different type of mediums such as murals, pinball machines, posters, clothing and more. I had the chance to ask Brian a few questions so check out my interview with him:<br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span id="more-6195"></span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Can you tell us a little bit about yourself:</span></strong><br />
Brian Holderman, 36. Born in State College PA, moved to Pittsburgh when I was 15. Been calling it home ever since.</p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvU3R1ZGlvLTIuanBn"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6236" title="Studio-2" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Studio-2.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="780" /></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><em>Studio photos courtesy of Brian Holderman</em></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvU3R1ZGlvLTMuanBn"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6237" title="Studio-3" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Studio-3.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="780" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvU3R1ZGlvLTQuanBn"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6261" title="Studio-4" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Studio-4.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="439" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>Did you attend art school or are you self taught:</strong><br />
I went to school for Graphic Design. Not sure if that&#8217;s considered art school or not, mostly because I always took heat for drawing answers to design problems.</span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvRnVubGFuZC5qcGc="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6235" title="Funland" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Funland.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="459" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>Over the years I noticed that you are doing more murals, how did you get involved with Sprout Fund for the one on Liberty Avenue. When you went into that project did you find anything about it intimidating:</strong> I have been working with the Sprout since 2001 as a freelance graphic designer, so I was familiar with projects they were developing. When the Public Art Program started in 2003, I decided to apply. The Liberty wall was incredibly intimidating simply because it was so damn big. That is what made it such a thing to accomplish.</span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvZG93bnRvd24uanBn"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6239" title="downtown" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/downtown.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="727" /></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><em>Mural Downtown on Liberty and Smithfield Street</em><br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>You have a distinct style, how would you describe it to someone that might not know your work:</strong><br />
I&#8217;ve been trying to describe my work to people for years, usually very badly. I personally think my work is always changing and evolving, but from an outsider&#8217;s view, people can usually tell a piece is mine. I always thought that was an interesting thing, but I was never able to put my finger on why that was.</span></span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvR2xhc3NCZWxsZS5qcGc="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6240" title="GlassBelle" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/GlassBelle.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="679" /></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><em>Glass Belle</em><br />
&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">I guess my style is a culmination of everything I was exposed to and interested in growing up &#8211; cartoons, comics, music and skateboarding. Those things made such an impression on me from an early age, it&#8217;s hard not to acknowledge their influence on why I draw things the way I do. </span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvTHVja3lUaGVQYWlucHJvb2ZNYW4uanBn"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6242" title="LuckyThePainproofMan" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/LuckyThePainproofMan.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="877" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>Your wife Nami is a fashion designer, do the two of you collaborate on projects often:</strong><br />
We have collaborated quite a bit over the years. Our longest ongoing collaboration has always been Nami&#8217;s <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3pldG8tY2xvdGhpbmcuY29tLw==">clothing line ZETO</a>. We had a store on the South Side for 6 years called Apartment, which was in fact, our apartment. It was such an odd but fun experience having people shop in our living room.</span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvR29kemlsbGEuanBn"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6203" title="Godzilla" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Godzilla.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="425" /></a></p>

<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>What are some of your favorite things about Pittsburgh:</strong> It&#8217;s a great place to be in the event of a zombie apocalypse.</span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvTmlyb1RoZURlc3RydWN0b3IuanBn"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6252" title="NiroTheDestructor" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/NiroTheDestructor.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="365" /></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><em>Niro The Destructor 25 x 12&#8242;</em><br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>I noticed you were in a show at Gallery 1988 x Adult Swim, did they invite you to participate:</strong><br />
They invited me to participate. I&#8217;m a fan of Adult Swim, so I thought it would be a fun show to do. My tribute painting was based on &#8220;Korgoth of Barbaria&#8221;, the show that was canceled after one episode.</span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvS29yZ290aFRoZUJhcmJhcmlhbi5qcGc="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6241" title="KorgothTheBarbarian" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/KorgothTheBarbarian.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="923" /></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><em>Korgoth The Barbarian</em></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvUGFyYWRpc2UuanBn"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6254" title="Paradise" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Paradise.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="437" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvUGluYnVyZ2gyMDEyLmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6255" title="Pinburgh2012" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Pinburgh2012.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="618" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>How would you describe your creative process:</strong><br />
Everything I do starts with pencil to paper sketching. Sometimes good ideas happen right away, sometimes they don&#8217;t. When they don&#8217;t, it&#8217;s time to leave the drawing table and do something totally off task, like mowing the yard or eating a chili dog. The stubborn idea usually shows up when you&#8217;re not looking for it anymore.</span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvVGhvdGhTcGVha3MuanBn"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6257" title="ThothSpeaks" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/ThothSpeaks.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="585" /></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>Sometimes I receive emails from students asking how to get noticed, I never really know how to answer. What would you tell them:</strong> Be persistent.</span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvV2lsa2luc2J1cmcuanBn"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6258" title="Wilkinsburg" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Wilkinsburg.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="390" /></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><em>Mural located in Wilkinsburg</em></span><br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>Any fun projects coming up that you are excited about:</strong><br />
I&#8217;m working on another solo show for Pittsburgh, opening November 3 at the Gallery 4. One piece in particular I&#8217;m currently making for this show has me very, very excited. I&#8217;m keeping details about it under my hat for now, but I would suggest bringing some quarters to the show&#8230;</span></span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvTHV0aGVycy1CYWNrZ2xhc3MuanBn"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6259" title="Luther's-Backglass" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Luthers-Backglass.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="487" /></a><br />

I want to thank <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL2Job2xkZXJtYW4uY29tLw==">Brian</a> for doing an interview with Steeltown and I look forward to seeing his work and murals all around the city.</p>

What really peaked my interest is the primary focus here is PHOTOGRAPHY! In March we decided to pay owner Melissa Catanese a visit at it&#8217;s Ice House location. Just this April I received the news that she found a new space right on Butler street which is exciting because there will be more foot traffic. I had the opportunity to ask Melissa a few questions, so check it out:<br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span id="more-6117"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>Tell us a little bit about yourself</strong><br />
I grew up in Cleveland, went to school in Columbus and then near Detroit, moved to Pittsburgh, then Brooklyn, and I’m now back in Pittsburgh. So, there’s a special place in my heart for the great lakes and rust belt region. To keep my mind balanced, however, I try to travel to new places and visit the west coast on a regular basis!</p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvc2hlbHZlcy5qcGc="><img src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/shelves.jpg" alt="" title="SONY DSC" width="585" height="433" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6125" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>What brought you to Pittsburgh</strong><br />
My boyfriend, who I met at graduate school, was living in Pittsburgh while I was finishing up my program so I would often come and visit. When I finished up in Michigan, we wanted to be in a bigger city, and came very close to moving to Chicago, but at the last minute, decided to stay in Pittsburgh. We’ve always loved to photograph here and in other areas of Western Pennsylvania and it just felt right. After about a year of living here, we had an opportunity in New York we couldn’t pass up, so we jumped on it. </p>

<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>What inspired you to open a bookstore that focuses on photography</strong><br />
Opening a photobook store has always been a distant dream of mine. I’m an avid photobook maker and collector, so I’ve spent a lot of time seeking out bookshops in other places. David Strettel of Dashwood Books, the very first bookshop on the East Coast dedicated to photography, has been a true inspiration to me since he opened his doors in New York. Also, while I was in New York, I began working with as a sales representative for R.A.M. Publications, an art book distributor in Los Angeles. This was a great experience, and I always envied the buyers at the museum shops and brick and mortar stores for their ability to really curate what they were putting on the shelves. </p>

<span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>How do you find some of the photographers and decide which books to carry</strong><br />
Curiosity is was starts it all, whether at a bookshop or on an artist’s website. When I see something I like, I tend to seek out the publishers first. And it’s usually a book I wish I had made myself! I focus mostly on publishers who only put out two or three titles a year. There’s so much out there and so many people making books, it’s hard to imagine I’ve even really tapped the surface. </p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvRFNDMDA3MS5qcGc="><img src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/DSC0071.jpg" alt="" title="_DSC0071" width="585" height="714" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6139" /></a></p>

<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>Do you have a couple favorites right now</strong><br />
It’s really hard to say my favorites! There’s a title I’m hoping to get in the shop soon by Swiss publisher, Kodoji Press that made quite an impression on me. MACK, a press in London, is definitely the heavyweight champion in the ring for me right now and I’m looking forward to their new title Lick Creek Line by Ron Jude at the end of the April. </p>

<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>What is next for Spaces Corners</strong><br />
I plan to expand the inventory a bit to include a rare and used section and a few select periodicals. I have a few events at the space scheduled in the coming months that include both local and guest artists. Spaces Corners is also participating in a few upcoming fairs, including <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5wZ2hwaG90b2ZhaXIuY29tLw==">PGH Photo Fair in Pittsburgh</a>, Open Space Publications &#038; Multiples Fair in Baltimore and the 3rd Annual Book Fair at Philadelphia Photo Arts Center.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Just so you know the <strong>Pgh Photo Fair is FREE</strong> and sounds like it&#8217;s going to be pretty amazing! The event happens in the former YMCA building in East Liberty at 120 S Whitfield St. You can check out <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5zcGFjZXNjb3JuZXJzLmNvbS9ldmVudHMuaHRtbA==">SC&#8217;s events page</a> or become a fan on <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5mYWNlYm9vay5jb20vcGFnZXMvU3BhY2VzLUNvcm5lcnMvMjYxNzA2MDU3MjA4MTY0">Facebook</a>! <p>It&#8217;s kind of crazy to think back a few years and I remember stumbling on <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5zdHJhd2JlcnJ5bHVuYS5jb20v">strawberryluna&#8217;s</a> posters while I lived in Bethlehem and emailing Allison through flickr. Since returning to Pittsburgh I have had the pleasure of getting to know Allison and Craig and seeing their studio continue to grow each year. They have a unique and simplistic style with their creations and whenever they release a new print I find myself wanting to own it. We finally got the chance to stop by their space where we took some photos and had the opportunity to interview both of them.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span id="more-6008"></span><br />
::INTERVIEW::<br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>Tell us a little about yourself:</strong><br />
I am originally from Philadelphia, clear across the state. I grew up right in the city, literally in the shadow of the Ben Franklin Bridge in Olde City. I actually always thought I would end up being a writer, since that’s what I spent the huge majority of my time doing almost obsessively in my teens and early 20s, but so far things didn’t work out that way. Yet! Art, illustration and printmaking were always strong interests, but I didn’t quite find the outlet for those things until a few years after moving to Pittsburgh and finding <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL2FydGlzdHNpbWFnZXJlc291cmNlLm9yZy8=">Artists Image Resource</a> on the Northside where I learned silkscreen printing from <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL2dpZ3Bvc3RlcnMuY29tL2Rlc2lnbmVycy5waHA/ZGVzaWduZXI9MjcyMDY=">Mike Budai</a>, Heather White and the crew at AIR’s open studio nights. -<em>Allison</em></span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvNzc5LmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6042" title="779" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/779.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="392" /></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><em>All photos were taken by <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5idXJuaW5nYnJpZ2h0c3R1ZGlvcy5jb20v">Kristy Lumsden</a></em><br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I was born right here in Pittsburgh! My family wasn&#8217;t much for the arts but my mother was very creative, great at ceramics and not too bad at painting. She was always supportive towards my artistic pursuits, our walls were always covered with my drawings. I took art classes a lot as a kid at the Carnegie Museum. I majored in writing at the University of Pittsburgh, and after a less than traditional approach, ended up as a Creative Director at a local ad agency. I couldn&#8217;t replicate my path if i tried. -<em>Craig</em></span></p>

&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>What made you decide to move to Pittsburgh:</strong><br />
It was honestly a bit of a lark. I knew I wanted to move out of Philadelphia and has aspirations of getting the West Coast. But, Pittsburgh was just 300 miles away and seemed like a good first move. If leaving home was a terrible mistake, I figured that I would be able to go return quite easily. I moved here sight unseen and as it turns out, never left for that pioneer-like push west. I love this city! It’s so easy to live here and I definitely consider this town home. -<em>Allison</em></span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvNzg0LmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6045" title="784" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/784.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="322" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>How and when did you first become interested in screen printing posters:</strong><br />
I’ve always been fascinated by various printmaking techniques and spent some time cutting and hand printing linoleum prints a while back. When I still lived in Philadelphia, a couple of friends of mine were using the printmaking studios at Temple University and were making these really rough and beautiful print editions that I loved. Not being enrolled there at the time, it seemed like a mysterious and magical way to make art. Additionally, since I was very very young, I’ve loved circus posters as well as propaganda posters. I can remember both the very first circus poster stapled to a telephone pole that I carefully took down and brought home, as well as my introduction to the ideology and methods of propaganda in a high school class on politics. The two sort of fused into one for me. However, my own personal poster work came much much later after I moved to Pittsburgh and was doing small run art prints at AIR during open studios. Rather than my seeking out working a life of making posters, somehow they found me. After posting some of the art prints that I had been doing on <a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL2dpZ3Bvc3RlcnMuY29tLw==">Gigposters.com</a>, I got connected to a promoter and a set of venues in Philadelphia who were looking to add a couple of new poster artists to their rosters. I agreed to give it a go and things have just gone upwards and onwards from there for strawberryluna. <em>-Allison</em></span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvNzg3LmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6046" title="787" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/787.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="355" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">I was always aware of them, but Allison was WAY more into them, our first apartment was covered with old circus posters, the bright colors, the fun images and the creepy clowns. I always liked the look of them, but honestly, when someone said screen printed posters, I always imagined the old San Francisco Fillmore posters. I really had no clue about the scene. Allison kinda did all the work and really dove in head first. And here we are all these years later. -<em>Craig</em></span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvNzg5LmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6047" title="789" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/789.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="389" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>Did you attend art school or are you self taught:</strong><br />
Nope! Self-taught all the way. As is Craig. We’re both pretty firm believers in education and being educated about what you are passionate about, even (or especially) when that means getting that knowledge outside of the traditional means. I went to the University of Pittsburgh and studied an Inter-Disciplinary degree combining Developmental Psychology and Literature with a Certificate in Women’s Studies and a lot of linguistics and Children’s Lit classes. Screen printing was totally a sidebar that I did for fun at that time. -<em>Allison</em></span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvNzk0LmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6052" title="794" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/794.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="399" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>How did you come up with the name strawberryluna:</strong><br />
I wish that there was some epic story about that! The truth is, the name just sort of came to me on summer day in 2005 when I wanted to transition from total lurker to poster in some threads on Gigposters.com. Pretty anti-climatic right? The name came about just a few months before I learned how to print. I like to think that sometimes stepping stones appear before you know where you are going. At least, that’s been my experience in life. -<em>Allison</em></span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvNzk1LmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6057" title="795" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/795.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="369" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">I&#8217;m always amazed by Allison&#8217;s creativity, and in the early years when it was just her, I always thought.. good lord, what if I end up doing this? Im gonna be called strawberryluna. I have to give Allison all the credit. I don&#8217;t think I would have named it this at all. But now, I wouldn&#8217;t want it any other way. When I see people looking at our work at shows, their eyes light up and they immediately smile at the name. SO, good job Allison. -<em>Craig</em></span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvNzk2LmpwZw=="><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6053" title="796" src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/796.jpg" alt="" width="585" height="335" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>Do you remember the first poster you did for a well known band? Were you nervous:</strong><br />
Of course! To both! The first poster that we did was for the band Garbage. It was a classic moment where I said “Yes” to something before really thinking it through by accepting that first gig as a challenge. It wasn’t until I was actually printing that poster, at AIR, during open studio that I got super nervous. At that point it was way too late to chicken out and I had to swallow my nausea and print on. I know if we had the opportunity to “think about” we probably would have let that chance pass us by out of fear. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and go for things that might seem outrageous. -<em>Allison</em></span><br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I remember it all too well, we had no clue what we were doing, no idea how to do separations and we kinda just winged the whole damn thing. -<em>Craig</em></span></p>
<p><a href="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3N0ZWVsdG93bmFudGhlbS5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTIvMDQvZmlyc3QtcHJpbnRzLmpwZw=="><img src="http://steeltownanthem.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/first-prints.jpg" alt="" title="first prints" width="585" height="274" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6091" /></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><em>Few of the very first prints</em><br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>What are some of your favorite objects in your studio:</strong><br />
Let’s see. I’ll handle the print studio in Friendship: Our light-box for sure because Craig, myself and my stepdad, painter Clay Johnson, built it from scratch and it can burn 2 large screens at once. The prints, posters and 2 paintings (again, by my stepdad) that adorn the studio walls made by some of our talented poster artist friends, and my print rack. I love that thing! I scored it from a sign and screen printing shop in Bloomfield that was closing down. I think we were all glad that such a solid piece of equipment was going to a new home where it would continue to work for a long time. <em>-Allison</em></span></p>

<p>In the home-design studio where we do all of our drawing, design, illustration and keep our books for inspiration, texture specimens, and the like, we have a reproduction of an Eames Native Bird sculpture. Other than that, the chair Allison bought me when we got engaged. -<em>Craig</em></p>

<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>If you had to recommend two books to another artist/ illustrator what would they be:</strong><br />
1. The amazing “Push Pin Graphic” 25 year collection, for sure. I go back to that collection often and I feel like I see and learn new things every time.<br />
2. I’m torn between the next two, so I am going to break the rules and name<br />
2a. Ezra Jack Keats “The Snowy Day” for it’s stunning beauty, simplicity and use of color and texture. That book has been setting my mind on fire since I was about<br />
2b. “Come Alive! The Spirited Art Of Sister Corita”, where every page is amazing. She combined her personal beliefs with propaganda and art like no one else before or since. Her story and work consistently blow me away. -<em>Allison</em></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>What is one piece of advice you would offer to an artist trying to break into screen printing:</strong><br />
Fuck up. No, really. In screen printing you *have* to print a lot, and that will lead to making a lot of mistakes. More mistakes than you can even imagine, because silkscreen printing is unique in that there are many ways to not just create your images, but also to mess up at every single stage along the way, of which there are many. You will make mistakes at each one of those stages, repeatedly.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
However, each mistake reveals something about the process that you could not otherwise learn, which is also unique about screen printing. So, you just need to dive in and experiment. And more, have fun! Make things that you like and then do it all over again the next time. -<em>Allison</em></span><br />
&nbsp;<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">There are tons of limitations to screen printing, once you embrace them, the possibilities are endless. <em>&#8212;-Craig</em></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: Arial;"><strong>Any fun projects coming up that you are stoked about:</strong><br />
We’ve got a bunch of gig posters lined up for the summer that we can’t wait to get cracking on and we are in the middle of writing and illustrating a children’s book for a good old skool publisher that we are really really excited about. It’s a dream project that I can’t wait to share once we’re ready. <em>-Allison</em></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial;">We want to sincerely thank Allison and Craig for taking the time to let us invade their studio, it was a lot of fun and I look forward to seeing all the new projects that have coming up this year!
