While I was at Redd Up Thread Up this past weekend I was reading a brochure from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and the statistics of how many people they are feeding every month are really high – “an average of 1,500 – 2,000 new households turn to us for help every month since August of 2008.” I really had no idea and it was shocking to see that that many people have to turn to them every month.
There are several ways you can donate to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank! A lot of folks I know work in offices so please think about starting a small food drive at work. Put out a couple boxes and ask your co-workers if they can bring in some canned goods or other non-perishable items. Anything you can donate counts! Also, a couple of the local radio stations are doing things to raise awareness. Out in the Robinson area in the Lowes parking lot Q92.9 is set up with a huge Mayflower truck taking donations. They are trying to fill the entire truck and won’t leave until they can’t fit anything else in there! I should note that there is a guy camping on top of the truck. So if you live out that way, you could just drop some things off there very easily. Also 96.1 Kiss has a silly “Gobble Gobble” song on iTunes you can download with all the proceeds being donated.
Visit the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank’s site and please take a moment to read the list of the “Most Needed Food Drive Items!”
